Discussions resumed in Qatar on Thursday regarding a truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, reiterated Thursday evening that any ceasefire in the territory must include a “complete” withdrawal of Israeli armed forces.

“Any agreement must result in a comprehensive ceasefire, a complete (Israeli) withdrawal from Gaza, and the return of displaced persons,” said a senior Hamas official, Hossam Badran, in Doha, where discussions resumed for a truce in the Gaza Strip.

“Crucial Discussions for Global Stability”

“We are at a crucial moment for global stability. The coming hours and days could define the future of the Middle East,” said British Foreign Secretary David Lammy in a statement. “A ceasefire would not only protect civilians in Gaza but also pave the way for broader de-escalation and bring the much-needed stability to the Middle East.”

In Beirut on Thursday, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné stated that a ceasefire in Gaza is “necessary” to ensure peace in the region. “We are all concerned about the regional situation.” France “supports Lebanon, and in this context, (…) we also wish for a ceasefire in Gaza, necessary to guarantee peace in the region,” he added.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz will meet with his British and French counterparts on Friday, who are visiting Israel for a brief visit, according to a statement from the spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Israel Katz will discuss with them efforts to prevent regional escalation. During this tripartite meeting, the ministers are also expected to discuss efforts to promote an agreement for the release of hostages.
